32. The sage attacks bird flu while it is a small threat instead of waiting for it to become a large threat.
Bird Flu Notes
Bird flu continues spreading. The H5 virus has now appeared in Poland, and a man in China has died of H5N1. Some countries – Sudan, Turkey, Tunisia, Iran, and Nigeria – are being accused of not cooperating with efforts to find out more information about the extent of bird flu in those areas. On the other hand, Malaysia plans to declare some areas of the country free of bird flu next week.
I continue to be surprised at the number of live bird markets in this country. Apparently they operate in twenty one states. And, did you know that a mild strain of bird flu was found last year in a live bird market in Philadelphia? Kind of interesting, huh?
On a more personal note, we eat a lot of chicken. If bird flu continues spreading, it will have an impact not only on our economy but also on our diet. This is already happening in many areas, and would undoubtedly happen here as well.
By the way
For those of you who are not sweating bird flu, at least not yet, what about West Nile Virus? In 2005 there were 116 deaths in the US from this mosquito-borne disease, up from 100 in 2004. Mosquito season is approaching.
